Course overview

MAT145 develops one-variable calculus for scientific and engineering problems. The official scope spans derivative-based analysis and optimization, integration and its geometric applications, then sequences and series, including Taylor expansions and convergence intervals.

Topics include Limits and derivatives of one-variable functions, Optimization and curve analysis, Definite, indefinite and improper integrals, Sequences and Taylor series.

Common difficulties

  • Choosing integration bounds and handling sign changes before interpreting an integral
  • Checking domains, endpoints and convergence conditions rather than relying on a symbolic result alone

Preparing for this course

Review factoring, function domains, trigonometric identities and exponential/logarithmic rules. Sketch a function before differentiating or integrating it. Practise distinguishing a rate, a signed accumulation and a geometric area; the same expression can lead to different questions.

Try a course problem

A particle moves along a straight line. Let tt be elapsed time in seconds; its signed velocity in metres per second is v(t)=t−2v(t)=t-2 for 0≤t≤50\le t\le5. Find its displacement and total distance travelled over this interval. If only its initial position changes, which of these two answers changes?

Show the reasoning

1. Distinguish the quantities. Displacement is the signed change in position; distance is the total length of the path travelled, regardless of direction. Let Δx\Delta x denote displacement and DD total distance. Then Δx=∫05v(t) dt\Delta x=\int_0^5v(t)\,dt, whereas D=∫05∣v(t)∣ dtD=\int_0^5|v(t)|\,dt. 2. Integrate the signed velocity. A convenient antiderivative is F(t)=t2/2−2tF(t)=t^2/2-2t, since F′(t)=t−2=v(t)F'(t)=t-2=v(t); the prime denotes differentiation with respect to time. Therefore Δx=F(5)−F(0)=(25/2−10)−0=2.5 m\Delta x=F(5)-F(0)=(25/2-10)-0=2.5\,\mathrm{m}. The positive answer means the final position is that far in the positive direction from the initial one. 3. Split where direction changes. The velocity is zero at t=2t=2, negative before that time and positive after it. Thus D=−∫02(t−2) dt+∫25(t−2) dtD=-\int_0^2(t-2)\,dt+\int_2^5(t-2)\,dt. Since F(2)=−2F(2)=-2, the first contribution is −[F(2)−F(0)]=2 m-[F(2)-F(0)]=2\,\mathrm{m}; the second is F(5)−F(2)=2.5−(−2)=4.5 mF(5)-F(2)=2.5-(-2)=4.5\,\mathrm{m}. Hence D=6.5 mD=6.5\,\mathrm{m}. Taking ∣Δx∣|\Delta x| would miss the earlier motion in the negative direction. 4. Check and interpret. The velocity graph forms triangles of area 12(2)(2)=2\frac12(2)(2)=2 and 12(3)(3)=4.5\frac12(3)(3)=4.5, confirming the two contributions. Changing the initial position shifts the entire position graph and the final position by the same amount. It changes neither the given velocity nor these integrals, so displacement and total distance remain unchanged.

How tutoring can help

Your tutor can review what your integral is intended to measure and help you locate a mistake in the sign, bounds or choice of method. You can then compare a sketch, an antiderivative and, where permitted, symbolic-software output to understand what each check tells you.

Exam preparation for MAT145

Use the current outline to build practice across limits, derivatives, integrals and series. For optimization, compare admissible stationary points and relevant boundaries. For improper integrals, write the limiting process; for a power series, test interval endpoints separately. Finish each exercise with a check chosen for that type of problem.

Use your section’s outline to choose the chapters to review. We work through permitted practice and comparable problems, without completing graded assignments or exams on your behalf.
