Course overview

027583 TEC examines the motion and dynamics of solid bodies in La Cité’s mechanical-engineering technology program. Kinematics describes position, velocity and acceleration; dynamics relates motion to its causes. In rotational motion, a point can accelerate even when angular speed is constant, because its velocity changes direction.

Common difficulties

  • Confusing angular acceleration with the full acceleration of a point
  • Adding perpendicular acceleration magnitudes as scalars

Preparing for this course

Review radians, unit conversions and perpendicular vector components. Distinguish angular quantities from the linear motion of a point on a rotating body. The radius matters when converting angular speed to linear speed.

Separate tangential and radial acceleration

A disk rotates about a fixed axis through its stationary centre and starts from rest with constant angular acceleration α=4 rad/s2\alpha=4\text{ rad/s}^2. For a point 0.25 m from the centre, find angular speed, tangential speed and both acceleration components after 3 s.

Show the reasoning
  1. Find the angular speed first

Let rr be the point’s distance from the axis, tt elapsed time and ω0\omega_0 the initial angular speed. With constant angular acceleration, ω=ω0+αt=0+4(3)=12 rad/s\omega=\omega_0+\alpha t=0+4(3)=12\text{ rad/s}. Linear speed is v=rω=0.25(12)=3 m/sv=r\omega=0.25(12)=3\text{ m/s}.

  2. Separate changing speed from changing direction

Tangential acceleration is at=rα=1 m/s2a_t=r\alpha=1\text{ m/s}^2. Radial acceleration points toward the centre and has magnitude ar=rω2=0.25(144)=36 m/s2a_r=r\omega^2=0.25(144)=36\text{ m/s}^2.

  3. Combine only as vectors

The components are perpendicular. If the total magnitude is needed, it is 12+362=1297 m/s2\sqrt{1^2+36^2}=\sqrt{1297}\text{ m/s}^2, not 37. A constant α\alpha does not make ara_r constant because ω\omega changes.

Try a changed problem

At the same time, consider a point 0.50 m from the centre. Which quantities double?

Check your reasoning

Angular speed remains 12 rad/s. The linear speed becomes 6 m/s, tangential acceleration 2 m/s² and radial acceleration 72 m/s². Each linear quantity here is proportional to radius.

How tutoring can help

A tutor can help you picture the motion before choosing equations. For a rotating object, you can mark a point together and explain the difference between a change in speed and a change in direction. The tutor can then guide you through the angular and linear quantities, units and calculation, starting wherever you need help.

Exam preparation for 027583 TEC

Build a short list of what each symbol measures before solving a motion problem. Practise checking a result with dimensions and with a limiting case such as zero angular acceleration. Follow the current chapter for the required rigid-body models.

Use your section’s outline to choose the chapters to review. We work through permitted practice and comparable problems, without completing graded assignments or exams on your behalf.
