A practice example

Choose axes that simplify the force diagram

A block slides on a frictionless incline at angle θ. Which part of its weight accelerates it down the slope?

Work through the reasoning

With one axis along the incline, the downslope weight component is mg sin θ. The perpendicular component mg cos θ is balanced by the normal force. Newton’s second law along the slope gives a = g sin θ. At θ = 0 the acceleration becomes zero, a useful limiting-case check.

Prepare for your lesson

Draw the body in isolation and include only forces acting on that body. Bring a question where choosing between Newton’s laws, energy or momentum was difficult. We can work on model selection before increasing the algebraic complexity.
