Humber Polytechnic CALC 1500 tutoring

Help with integration, series, multivariable calculus and vector calculus.

Course overview

CALC 1500 covers integration, infinite series, multivariable derivatives and vector-calculus integrals in Humber’s engineering degree mathematics sequence. The example below focuses on directional derivatives and tangent planes: finding a gradient, using a unit direction vector and interpreting the result.

The topics here come from the 2025–26 course description. We have not confirmed their alignment with the 2026–27 outline. Your current outline, if you have it, helps us identify the topics you’re studying.

CALC 1500 topics to review

Trigonometric substitution, partial fractions and improper integralsSequences, series, power series and Taylor/Maclaurin seriesPartial and directional derivatives, gradients and tangent planesDouble integrals, conservative fields, line and surface integrals

Common difficulties

  • Using an unnormalized direction in a rate calculation
  • Assuming a power series includes its endpoints automatically

Useful foundations to review

Review single-variable derivatives and integrals, vector components and dot products. When taking a partial derivative, say which variable stays fixed. Before a directional derivative, normalize the direction so your result measures change per unit distance.

Connect a directional rate and a tangent plane

For f(x,y)=x2+xy+2y2f(x,y)=x^2+xy+2y^2, find the directional derivative at (1,2)(1,2) in the direction of the vector (3,4)(3,4). Also find the tangent plane to z=f(x,y)z=f(x,y).

Show the reasoning
  1. Evaluate the gradient

∇f=(2x+y,x+4y)\nabla f=(2x+y,x+4y), so ∇f(1,2)=(4,9)\nabla f(1,2)=(4,9). Each component measures change along one coordinate direction while the other coordinate is fixed.

  2. Use a unit direction

The vector has length 5, giving u=(3/5,4/5)u=(3/5,4/5). Thus Duf=(4,9)⋅(3/5,4/5)=48/5D_u f=(4,9)\cdot(3/5,4/5)=48/5. Using (3,4)(3,4) directly would multiply the requested rate by five.

  3. Build the local plane

Here hh is a small signed distance along the unit vector u\mathbf u; the tangent plane gives a first-order approximation to ff. Since f(1,2)=11f(1,2)=11, the plane is z=11+4(x−1)+9(y−2)z=11+4(x-1)+9(y-2). It passes through (1,2,11)(1,2,11), and its two slopes match the gradient. Along a small displacement huhu, it predicts a change of 48h/548h/5.

Try an independent variation

Repeat for g(x,y)=2x2−xy+y2g(x,y)=2x^2-xy+y^2 at (2,1)(2,1), in direction (−4,3)(-4,3).

Check your reasoning

∇g(2,1)=(7,0)\nabla g(2,1)=(7,0), and the unit direction is (−4/5,3/5)(-4/5,3/5). The rate is −28/5-28/5. Since g(2,1)=7g(2,1)=7, the plane is z=7+7(x−2)z=7+7(x-2).

How tutoring can help

Tell us which topic or problem feels unclear, even if you’re unsure of the method. A tutor can work through the setup with you, draw an integration region or connect a gradient to a tangent plane. You can then try a similar problem together and discuss how the direction, domain or assumptions affect the result.

Exam preparation for CALC 1500

Build mixed practice from the chapters actually assessed. State the condition behind each method: convergence for an improper integral, endpoint checks for a power series, or orientation for an applicable integral. Explain what changes when the direction or domain changes.

Use your section’s outline to choose the chapters to review. We work through permitted practice and comparable problems, without completing graded assignments or exams on your behalf.
