CEGEP Mechanics Tutoring

Build a reliable method for CEGEP mechanics: choose a system, sketch the motion or forces, and justify Newton’s laws or conservation before calculating.

Topics covered

Position, velocity and accelerationVector componentsNewton’s laws and frictionWork and energyMomentum and collisionsRotation, torque and equilibrium

Common difficulties

  • Drawing forces on the selected object rather than forces it exerts
  • Assuming a moving object must have a nonzero net force
  • Applying conservation without checking external forces or work

How tutoring can help

We separate the physical model from the algebra. A free-body diagram includes actual interactions, not a generic force of motion. State axes and signs, write one principle, and only then substitute numbers. The final check asks whether direction, units and scale make physical sense.

An example that connects the ideas

A 2 kg object slides horizontally with a 10 N rightward applied force and 4 N leftward friction. Choose right as positive: ΣFₓ = 10 − 4 = 6 N, so aₓ = 6/2 = 3 m/s². The net force determines acceleration, not the object’s current speed.

A question to check understanding

Could it be moving left at that instant? Yes. Rightward acceleration can slow leftward motion before reversing it.

Exam preparation

Review with a clear plan.

Practise selecting between kinematics, forces, energy and momentum without a chapter label. Explain why the selected model applies. Include graphs and qualitative questions as well as calculations; laboratory uncertainty is reviewed when included in your own section.
